Twenty-eight acres of land along Fountain Creek, a part of the farm land acquired by Herbert G. Sinton in 1928, was given by the Sinton family to the El Paso County Park and Recreation District Friday.

The strip of land, more than one mile long, is destined to become a link in the county's linear park system and that of the city of Colorado Springs. This system will also be connected with one stretching northward along the backbone of the Rocky Mountains and into Canada.

Presentation of the deed was carried out in ceremonies held on the land itself, near where Colorado Highway 83, or Academy Boulevard, crosses the strip at about the midway point.

James H. Sinton and Marietta Sinton Gray, both of Colorado Springs, presented the deed, transported to the site in an old milk wagon once used for deliveries by the Sinton family dairy, to the chairman of the park district, Frank Conway.

Accepting for the park district, Conway said it had been public minded citizens like the Sintons and Gen. William J. Palmer that had made the Colorado Springs area such a beautiful place to live. He praised the Sintons for their concern with the environment of the region.

Other members of the Sinton family present for the ceremony were Wilbur Sinton, Arthur Sinton and Dr. Eleanor Sinton.

Among park board members present, in addition to Conway, were vice chairman Robert K. Hall, who was chairman of the park district through its formative months, Julian Rawls, Robert Louden and Mrs. Effa Mae Marker.

Commissionere Stan Johnson represented the county commissioners.

The linear park system of which the Sinton land becomes a part will be used for foot trails, bridle paths and open space links between other parks along the Front Range and into the mountains.

The Sinton family's history in the Colorado Springs area goes back to 1880 when two brothers, George H. and Melvin H. Sinton started a small dairy at what is now the intersection of Willamette and Corona Streets. Their dairy herd eventually grew to more than 800 milk cows.

In 1928, the family acquired land south of the city that formerly was the Bates and Hassler Ranch, It was a part of this land that was given the park system Friday.

A memorial service will be held for James H. Sinton at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Stephen's Chapel of Grace Episcopal Church.

Officiating clergyman will be the Rev. Robert Hewitt.

Cremation was arranged by The Law Mortuary.

Mr. Sinton, 3901 Janitell Road, died in a local hospital Tuesday.

He was president of Sinton Dairy Farm Co., and the Hassler-Bates Co. He had been associated with the Sinton Dairy Co. for 38 years and served on the board of directors.

Born Sept. 13, 1914 in Colorado Springs, Mr. Sinton was graduated from Colorado Springs High School where he played football and was twice named All-State tackle. He attended Dartmouth College for a year and was graduated in 1937 from The Colorado College where he also played football and was twice selected as All-Conference tackle.

He was married Sept. 8, 1937 in Colorado Springs to the former Adele Hayes-Davis, a descendant of Jefferson Davis, first and only president of the Confederate States of America.

During World War II, Mr. Sinton served with the Merchant Marines in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Adele Sinton; a son, James Michael Sinton, and a granddaughter, Alexandra Sinton, both of Littleton and a sister, Mrs. John Gray of Colorado Springs.
