Fred was one of the best known and respected characters in the Donadea district because of his involvement with the local community.

Shortly after leaving Donadea National School, Fred became a postman, delivering mail to Cutsywn, Mount Armstrong, Painestown, Rathcoffey, Clonshambo and Hodgestown. In the afternoon he collected the outgoing mail from Hortland, Newtown and Ballagh and took it to Donadea Post Office for onward transmission to Dublin.
