GENERAL NOTES |
Quaker. Tenant farmer.
Founder of the Richmond Sintons. Caryl Sinton Carlson [CSC] information says he was from Religious Society of Friends, that John, James & Joseph came to Richmond, Virginia, USA in 1816. CSC says he married at the Ballinderry Friends Meeting House with these witnesses: John Clarke, Henry Clarke, Sarah. John is called "of Rockmacreany" in the WLS/JRHG pedigree. Rebecca's parents are of Ballinlargy, Co. Antrim. John and Rebecca Clarke Sinton are progenitors of the Richmond Sintons. Letter from Samuel Sinton, dated in 1905 to Walter Lyon Sinton says, "My father, William Sinton, born in Richhill, near Belfast, Ireland, in June 1788, emigrated to this country in 1810. His father was John Sinton and had six sons, Jacob, John & Henry - twins, William, Joseph and James." "My father was 63 days crossing the Atlantic to Philadelphia in a sailing vessel. I cannot give you the dates of the emigration of Jacob, Joseph & James. Father had ten children, five of whom died in infancy. Four sons and one daughter attained maturity. John C. (Father to James W.), Charles J. and Mrs. Sallie Ann Samson are now dead. Myself and younger brother, Richard B. are survivors. My Uncle Jacob married Sallie Murphy, by whom he had three sons and three daughters, all now dead. I know nothing of the families of uncle John and Henry. Uncle James had three sons and four daughters, of whom two sons and two daughters still survive....I was born and have lived all my life in this City. I am 72 years of age and married my second cousin, Sarah Elizabeth Sinton, eldest daughter of Edward Sinton. My younger brother Richard, is a bachelor." Referring to the same events and people, a letter from Miss Mollie Wrenn Vaughn, 22 August 1933 "I suppose that you know about the trip Rebecca Clark Sinton took to America after the death of her husband in Armagh, Ireland?" In Passenger Lists from Ireland, excerpted from "Journal of the American Irish Historical Society", Vol 28 & 29, pg 42 are listed: Henry, James, John, Joseph, and Rebecca Sinton, all from Bushill (sic) on ship #20. #20 is the Empress Alexander, from Londonderry, arrived 1815, November 25 in Port New York, 64 passengers. [The story of the trip is not found. JHJ] Question: Who was Henry Sinton, "a young man, now of Richmond, Virginia, received on certificate from the Monthly Meeting held in Cork, Ireland and referred to care of Richmond Particular Meeting (clear) (Certificate dated 1816, 4 mo. 16)." And 1819, 3 mo. 6: Henry Sinton disowned for marrying his first cousin. [Margaret Sinton, 1819, 1 mo. 2: (formerly McDonnell), disowned, married contrary to discipline; 1820, 4 mo., 1; condemned for conduct and requests reinstatement; 1821, 1 mo. 6: Margaret reported removed to another Monthly Meeting; 1821, 5 mo 5: Margaret, formerly of Richmond, Va, reinstated and granted certificate to New York Monthly Meeting of Friends elsewhere (removed with her husband).] (Hinshaw, Virginia) Henry, son of Rebecca (Clark) Sinton, b. 1785 = 34 in 1819; a "young man"? Margaret McDonnell, his first cousin, married John Sinton of Cork? Did Henry marry one of his Murphy cousins? [JHJ] When Samuel Spavold and Thomas Carrington visited the families of the Ballyhagan Meeting in 1779, John was living in the village of Richhill.
