[RFSS Jul 2011] August 1992; Wilbur Sinton saw the tombstones for Anne and William O'Brien and their sons, Anson John, Daniel, and William and a tiny unmarked stone that may have been that of the baby John who died. They are in the Hicksite Quaker Burying Ground. Anne (Greeves) and William O'Brien were the recipients of the letters. Their family is extensively covered. When their grandchildren were beginning to be born Anne requested the name change to Sinton. She wanted them spared from the persecutions she had suffered from the Irish Catholic connotation assumed from the name O'Brien. (Joseph Sinton's information to LBS) All her grandchildren carried the names either Candee or Sinton. Note: William wore the Quaker hat until he was fifty (Joseph's newspaper article). William leaned toward the Hicksite persuasion. William made caskets, etc. and in the later 1840's was trying to get a mill, probably lumber, started. Unlike many Quakers, Anne had a wedding ring, a single row of little pearls, cut in half. Margaret Sinton Otis gave it to LBS when her mother Margaretta Jane Sinton Otis died, and LBS and Bell (Sinton) Willett gave it to me when I graduated from college. I also have a few of the old coin silver spoons from Aunt Morton of Philadelphia. The encyclopedia set, also from Aunt Morton or Aunt Greeves, used by this family is in Tutt. [JHJ] |
