GENERAL NOTES
Obituary published in the British Medical Journal, Volume 291, 7 December 1985 reads

Dr. A. E. Fraser-Smith, formerly medical superintendent of Bethnal Green Medical Mission, died suddenly on 11 November.

Alfred Edward Fraser-Smith - always known as Fraser to his friends - was born in 1902 and educated at Brighton College and St. Bartholomew's Hospital. After qualifying with the conjoint diploma in 1926 he was house physician at Barts and then house surgeon and resident medical officer at the Hospital of St. Cross, Rugby. He took his MB, BS in 1927 and the DTM&H in 1929 before going to India in 1930 as a medical missionary, where he showed considerable surgical skill. From 1942 to 1946 he served with the King's Own Royal Border Regiment and was mentioned in dispatches. He returned to England in 1946 and became medical superintendent of the Bethnal Green Medical Mission, where he continued work until 1963, when he retired owing to failing health and moved to Carnforth.

Dr. Fraser-Smith had a deep and active Christian faith, which showed itself particularly in his work among the people: he was a founder member of Watford Crusaders. He had a keen sense of humour and a friendly disposition, which were greatly appreciated by his wide circle of friends. His wife, Eileen, was a Barts nurse who supported and shared in all his activities throughout their long and happy married life; they celebrated their golden wedding in 1981. He is survived by Eileen, one daughter, and two grandchildren,

CGS.
