| William Henry Taft was a blacksmith in Caroline Center, and built and operated a small general store there. He enlisted as 2nd lieutenant in Company K of the 137th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry, in the Union Army, and died of typhoid fever shortly after enlistment and mustering near Harper's Ferry. Prior to enlistment he was a blacksmith. He built and maintained a small store in Caroline Center, NY, and is buried in Caroline Center.
