Road race fans bid a final farewell to Sinton
AN air of depression has taken over the town of Tandragee since the death of local motorcyclist Eddie Sinton, his minister said today.
Mr Sinton, who died on his way to hospital on Saturday following a high speed crash during the Carrowdore 100 meeting, was due to be buried in the town today.
Road racing fans were expected to gather at Ballymore Parish Church for the funeral this afternoon.
Reverend Samuel Black this morning described Mr Sinton as "an honourable man".
"I met Eddie through his late grandmother who he gave great care to," he said.
"It is a very sad day today for the family and for the town as this is the second rider to die from the town this year."
Mr Black said he had spent the weekend at Mr Sinton's family home.
"His mother is being supported by the motorcycling fraternity but it is afterwards that it will be harder.
"Yesterday I walked into the town and there was a lot of heaviness and sadness and an air of depression about."
He added that it was up to the riders themselves to find the solution to the recent spate of deaths in the sport.
"There do need to be more safety measures introduced but I would hate to see the sport driven underground if it was banned," he said.
Mr Sinton (35) hit a grass bank during the second lap of the Regal 600 race at the weekend.
In a tragic coincidence his mother Sheila, a first aider at the course, was the first on the scene of the horrific accident.
Mr Sinton's death is the latest in a string of tragedies to rock the road racing world over the past year.
He is the eighth local rider to die in just over 12 months.
Yesterday, road racing chiefs warned that several of Ulster's lethal road racing circuits are to be closed in a clampdown on safety.
As the sport was mourning the death - the third in a matter of weeks - Motor Cycle Union of Ireland president Jim Cray said a number of tracks will be axed in a bid to stop the recent carnage.
