He had one brother (killed by lightning in 1852) and five sisters. Received a common-school education and taught several terms. For many years was a sabbath-school superintendent in the Methodist Church. He was an earnest and devout Christian, and was a member of the church from 1851 to 1908.

Before James and Sarah Jane were married, he was doing carpentry work on a house her father was building. There was sickness in the family, and the doctor, making a professional call, said to James that he (James) had better take one of the girls of the family for his pay. James replied that he would have his pay and one of the girls, too!

James and Sarah Jane were married March 23, 1847. They lived all their lives at Caroline Center, where James worked for the most part as a carpenter.

In 1863 he was supervisor of the Town of Caroline and played an active part in raising troops for the Union Army. He was always an active, outspoken advocate of temperance and did much to bring about prohibition in his town.

"Mr. and Mrs. Snow both enjoy the respect and esteem of the community in which they were born and hav spent their eminently useful and Christian lives. They have an interesting family, the members of which are likewise held in high regard." From the History of Tioga, Chemung, Tompkins, and Schuyler Counties, New York. 1879
